Her father, Joseph Thottumkal originally from an Achayan family in Thodupuzha, managed several businesses before he decided to manage his daughter's acting career instead where he accompanies her to all her foreign shoots. Her mother, Seline Thottumkal, remains a surgeon who moved settlements from Cochin to Chennai to Mumbai to live with her daughter. Asin has quoted that her name "means pure and without blemish". Asin and Jayam Ravi in M. Kumaran S/O Mahalakshmi
Asin's first Tamil language film was M. Kumaran son of Mahalakshmi, in which she co-starred with Jayam Ravi. Asin reprised her role from her film Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi for the remake, which saw her portraying a Malayali girl instead of the Tamil girl in the original. The movie subsequently went on to become one of the biggest hits in Tamil cinema during 2004, introducing Asin to Tamil film industry. After a brief return to Telugu films, to do Chakram, she appeared in Ullam Ketkumae. The film, initially launched in 2002, is a college love story, directed by Jeeva, which was long-delayed but eventually became a successful venture at the box-office, creating wider opportunities for her and the rest of the lead cast.

Eating carrots 'makes you more attractive': study

Eating carrots LONDON: Eating strongly coloured vegetables and fruit such as carrots and plums makes people more attractive, according to a new British study.

Researchers at St Andrews and Bristol universities studied the relationship between skin colour and attractiveness, and found people with a yellow skin hue were perceived as particularly healthy and attractive, the Grocer magazine reported.

They also established for the first time that yellow pigments, or carotenoids, from certain fruit and vegetables played a key role in producing yellowness in skin.

As part of the study, 40 volunteers rated 51 Scottish Caucasian faces for healthiness and attractiveness.

The results will be published in the journal Evolution and Human Behaviour in March, the magazine said.

Ian Stephen, one of the scientists involved in the project, said the link between yellowness and carotenoids opened up new strategies for encouraging young people to eat more fruit and vegetables, especially as it took just two months of increased consumption to produce visible results.

He told the Grocer: "Telling people they might have a heart attack in 40 years' time if they don't eat more healthily is one thing. What we can do is say, 'This is what you could look in a couple of months if you increased your fruit and veg intake'."

Kerala artist enters Guinness for dance marathon

Kerala artist enters Guinness for dance marathon THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Eminent Mohinyattam exponent Kalamandalam Hemalatha has entered the Guinness Book of World Record for the' longest dance marathon.'

Hemalatha set the mark, erasing the record of Hyderabad-based Vettikotta Yadagiri, through her 123-hour performance staged in Thrissur in September last.

The certificate, received by Hemalatha, said " the longest marathon by an individual was 123 hours and 15 minutes achieved by Kalamandalam Hemalatha."

"More than a personal achievement, I consider this as a recognition of Mohiniyattam, the unique dance form of Kerala", Hemalatha said.

"When I embarked on the mission, there was criticism from certain quarters that this was a cheap stunt which marred the beauty and elegance of Mohiniyattam. But I was convinced that mine is a humble attempt to know the world about this performing tradtion unique to Kerala", she said.

Hemalalatha compelted the record-making performance in her second attempt after she had to call off her first bid after 64 hours of dancing as she fell ill on stage.

The artist, who now runs a dance school in Thrissur, said the Guinness honour came as an inspiration to launch programmes to instil interest in Kerala dance forms among youngsters. She said planned to embark on a one-month-old all-Kerala relay from January 26 to create health and physical fitness awareness among women and children.
